After our mentor meeting the other night, I felt blue and more than a bit discouraged. I sent a quick message to Malcolm, suggesting a brief debriefing. Not thirty minutes later, we were communicating across space and time, and what an incredible comfort.
Since meeting Malcolm and beginning to work together, I have experienced a full spectrum of emotions—self-doubt, desire to please, uncertainty, joy. I have struggled a little bit with the notion of collaboration, having grown up learning the idea that it was more impressive to succeed on one’s own merit.
I have thought several times that I would be more impressive as a composer and musician were I to commit to the craft on my own two feet.
Yet, time and again, I am humbled and grateful to be a part of a creative duet in the adventure of songwriting and entrepreneurship. What a relief to witness my own fears reflected back in another person’s face and heart. I am not alone in my self-doubt. Comfort comes from grounded wisdom as well.
We are right where we needed to be in our business venture, and we are in it together. Two minds. Two hearts. We hold each other accountable, and we create works of incredible beauty when we put our two minds and hearts into our work.
I remembered that our mentor would not be working with us if he did not believe we could succeed. And regardless of what the future holds, we will continue to persevere together. Of this, I am certain.
And for this, I am thankful.
Wishing you all thankfulness and perspective on this Thanksgiving Day. I am infinitely thankful for each and every one of you.
